Outdoors
There’s no better way to enjoy the natural beauty of our mountains than in the great outdoors. From laid-back to adventurous, we have an incomparable variety of outdoor activities for all ages. You’ll never be bored, but it will be a challenge to fit all these activities into your stay.
Hiking
Our North Carolina mountains offer opportunities for hikers of all skill levels. Select trails that lead to waterfalls, mountain scenery, wildlife viewing and wildflowers with elevation changes that range from 2,000 to 6,000 feet.
Cashiers’ own Jackson County has over fifteen well-maintained mountain hiking trails, including 675 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone. The famous Appalachian Trail lies just to the north.
There are various guide services for day hikes in the area. Visit the Jackson County website for local Hiking Trail information here.

Croquet
Croquet is Fun for All Ages
The Arbor Lawn at Trillium is a perfect spot to while away an afternoon with a casual game of croquet. The equipment is already set up for you all season long in this wide-open space with its lush lawn and flowering shrubs.
Anyone can join in on the regularly scheduled games throughout the season. Or reserve the court for your own special family or group gathering.
Clubs and balls are available at the Apple Orchard Park indoor tennis and fitness center, just adjacent to the Arbor Lawn.
Horseback Riding
Whether you’re looking for an exciting adventure on horseback or a leisurely trail ride with wonderful scenery, you don’t have to look far. Nearby Arrowmont Stables has one of the best Trail Ride Programs in the Southeast. They have trails of varying lengths for every age and skill level, each with different scenery. Stables are open Year Round.
Arrowmont includes a complete safety and training demonstration with each ride. They also offer several Summer Horse Day Camp options to introduce your child to horsemanship.

Stroll Through Lush Woods
Explore the area’s natural beauty at a leisurely pace right within Trillium. The Lakeside Nature Trail begins just below Lakewood Lodge and winds its way through lush rhododendron forests and tiny mountain brooks. A descending path down the trail even leads you to the edge waters of Lake Glenville. Just a short walk from your doorstep is another easy trail, Mule Kicking Falls. Follow this shorter but very popular trail to a little waterfall and picnic site.
Don’t forget to bring your camera. Did you know that our own Nantahala National Forest hosts the greatest bio-diversity of any eco-system in North America? Don’t miss this opportunity to capture some of nature’s most inspiring sights.
Gem Mining
Experience the thrill of finding rare gemstones in the rough. Each year thousands of people flock to nearby Franklin, NC known as the “Gem Capital of the World”.
For a fun family experience visit one of the “salted” or “enriched” mines where you’re sure to find a gem. True rockhounds will appreciate the “native only” mines for naturally occurring gemstones such as Rubies, Sapphires, Garnets, Moonstone and more. Several mines offer onsite gem cutting and polishing, and most are open early Spring through late Autumn.
Visit the Franklin, NC website for a local Gem Mine Map here.

Bird Watching
North Carolina’s State Bird
From Lakewood Lodge’s decks in the treetop canopy, you’ll sight Cardinals, Juncos, Warblers, Tanagers, Chickadees, Goldfinch, Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Towhees, Purple Finches and the rarer Crossbills.
You’ll find a large bird-feeder and bird book so you can look up each new sighting. It’s great fun for everyone.
Walk through the wooded trails and you may spot an Indigo Bunting or the rare Red-Cockaded Woodpecker.
“...Lakewood Lodge is a wonderful place - filled with possibilities! We take away many happy memories and look forward to our next visit. The hike to Whiteside Mountain was a real treat. Thank you!”
